Ironman Wisconsin

Ironman Wisconsin
Madison, WI
Conditions: Mild

If you don't want to read the entire summary of my 11 hour race plus all the before and after details, then here is the Cliff Notes version: Pre-race was relaxing, swim was right on my goal pace, T1 was slow because of lots of people, Bike was fast for the first half, slow due to wind and being tired for the second half, T2 was fast, Run was fast for 6 miles, slow for 12, fast for 6. Finish was 10:50:59. Recovery was great, no real problems with tiredness or mobility, only some rub marks remain. Chipotle Burrito was perfect. It was a fantastic experience and I could not have done it without Jerry, Jeremy, Denny, the WellFit team, and especially Tanya.

All week before this race, I had been really sick. It was a head cold and my sinus were plugged, I had a sore throat and just felt terrible. I guess getting sick before Ironman is fairly common. They say when you come down off of all the intense training and rest, your body lets down too. Friday I felt a little better, but I was still pretty drugged up. I figured I had two days to get well. But still, I knew there would be some lasting side effects.

I left for Madison on Friday before the race. Earlier this year, my Dad told Tanya that you could tell when I was nervous because I would forget things. In the past I'd get to the starting line and realize I'd forgot my race shoes, I'd forgotten shorts once, and in Triathlons, forgetting something can be disaster. I commonly forget my swim cap... So on Friday morning as I took my first load of gear out to my car, I not only forgot my car keys, but I locked myself out of my apartment. No keys, no phone, no wallet and Tanya had just left for work. My building has a buzzer, but it doesn't work, and even if it did, there are several empty apartments and I only know a couple of my neighbors. My apartment has two possible entries and that means it has two escape routes. I set my gear in the doorway of one of the exits and then stood at the corner of the building, perched carefully so I could see both exits and grab a neighbor who was leaving. After about 25 minutes, my next door neighbor left. I got him to let me in and I was back on track.

I was excited to drive up because I got to use my new roof bike rack (thanks for the birthday present everyone) The drive up was nice, I was by myself and had plenty of time to envision my future pain. I arrived at the Hilton Monona Terrace and unloaded my gear. It took 6 trips between the parking garage and my room to get everything to the room. All the hotel luggage carts were in use, so I just slugged it up. The process took a great deal of time because there was only two elevators that went to the garage, and most the elevators were packed with people with bikes and gear. The room was excellent, had a perfect view of the swim course.

I met up with Jerry & Denny and we had lunch and went to the checkin. Checkin was quick, lots of volunteers helping. One of them saw my name and said "I'm supposed to be cheering for you." She turned out to be a friend of Kelly Noel, not just another Benny Triathlon groupie. That night my and the gang attended the Welcome Dinner and participant meeting. Jerry and I walked up to a Walgreens by the Capital and did some snack shopping. Tanya showed up later, Kelly and Hans dropped her off in a light rain.

Saturday morning Denny, Jerry and the rest of the gang met at swim entrance to get in a little warmup. The weather was great, warm and sunny. I put 20 minutes in the water at a light pace. I discovered a pretty good tear in my wet suit that was going to need to be fixed before the race, I was taking on some water! Jerry and I got in an easy 30 minute bike shortly after that and I did a quick 20 minute run. I was feeling a lot better this day, the cold was wearing off. Kelly had told me not to take any allergy or cold medicine on the day before the race because it dehyrdrates you. Definitely good advice. On Friday night, I had set out all of my gear bags and went through my list of what goes into each bag. Saturday I packed all of my bags and then dropped off the swim-to-bike and bike to run bags. This would not be the last time I would see those. differing reports about the weather on Sunday kept coming in, so I revisited the swim-to-bike bag about 6 more times, making adjustments. The weather report said rain, almost for certain. So this was putting a little of stress on my decisions because I wasn't sure how I should start. But in Ironman, it's best to start with it than without it. I put the foot warmers on my bike shoes, then I took them off later. I rubber cleat protectors on my shoes, then took them off. I borrowed a rain jacket from Kelly & Hans that had removable sleeves, so my final move to was to remove the sleeves. After the bags, I dropped off my bike in the corral. I would come back later to cover the seat with a plastic bag because of the rain predictions. Not sure if that really does anything, because my butt is wet after being in the water.

Tanya and I had a fun time throughout the day, taking in all of the festivities. We made sure we got all the free swag we could. I took my wetsuit to get repaired. This older Russian women fixed it did a really good job. She was very talkitive and really loved repairing these things. My Mom showed up later in the day. She came down and picked Tanya and I up. We went out to her hotel in West Madison and then met up with Kelly and Hans at Biaggi's. Tanya loves Biaggi's because they have gluten free options. I had my usual pre-race fettucine alfredo with cream sauce and a glass of wine. We got back to the hotel and went back to my bike one last time. I setout my special needs bags for the next day. The next day was going to start early, so I got to bed around 10.

I got a pretty good nights sleep. The experts (Denny & Jeremy) tell you, get a good nights sleep two nights before because the night before you're always restless. I got up at 4:15 and did a short 20 minute run. I call it an activation run because it gets my metabolism running. If I get up and drink or eat something, it sits in my stomach unless I've got everything running. I came back, used the bathroom, took a shower and headed out. I made Tanya go back to bed. She's weird, she wants to be up when I'm up. I convinced her to sleep and she went back to bed. I headed out to drop off my special needs bags. I then took about 30 pounds of gear to my bike. I had all my nutrician for the day with me. I geared up the bike with tools, 2 bottles of water, Gatorade Endurance and Perpetum. I also put a dab of Vasciline under my seat. My friend Jon recommended this because you can use it if you feel rub coming on. I then headed to my transition bags and put in some last minute gear.

The Swim
They had said rain, but it was clear and beautiful out. Some predictions were still saying rain by 10 AM, but I was ignoring that at this point. I'd deal with that as it happens. I met up with Tanya and my Mom at the Hilton and they headed over to the start with me. I got lubbed up and put on my wetsuit and headed to start line. I wasn't with Jerry and Denny, but I was doing alright by myself. I had plenty of time to gather my thoughts. Normally I'm over hydrated at this point and I need to use the 'wetsuit facilities', I think that's one of the reasons they call it a wetsuit. I did't have to go today. I was a little nervouse because I was worried that I hadn't drank enough. I got in the water and swam out to the ski ramp. I figured this was a good starting area because I'd have a little room to operate at the beginning. The Ironman swim is a full contact sport, unlike anything I've ever experienced. As soon as the gun goes off, you will not go more than a stroke with out having your feet grabbed, legs clawed, head pushed under, or just be completely run over. This goes on for over an hour if you're of my speed! I picked a fairly good line, I wasn't way far away from the race line, and I wasn't too crowded. I felt pretty good about my swim as I was going through it. I wasn't going too hard and I kept a even pace. The swim is two loops. I finished one loop, checked my watch and I was right on goal pace at 35 minutes. As I finished the second loop, I picked up the pace for last 200 meters. I got out of the water and got to experience the wetsuit strippers. Yes, it's exactly what you think it is. I unzipped my wetsuit, pulled it down to my waste, layed on the ground and two volunteers came up and whipped off my suit. Very quick, very cool. They handed me my wet suit and I sprinted up the helix of the Monona Terrace, on my way to T1. I was pretty much on goal, 1:14:16 out of the water was just a few minutes slower than I'd wanted to be. But I felt awesome. This Ironman stuff ain't that hard!

T1
The problem with swimming a 1:14 leg, I'm coming out in prime time and there's a lot of people. As I sprinted up the helix, I was passing dozens of people. I got to T1 and found my bag. A volunteer handed it to me and directed me to the changing room. The changing room was packed. Not a place to sit when I came in. I ran around the room until I found a spot. The other problem I had was all the volunteers were busy. I dumped my bag on the floor and got my shoes on, then tried to put my jersey on. My jersey got stuck and I was like a lame duck. A volunteer helping the guy next to me helped get me get my shirt on. It seemed like this was taking an eternity. I then put on my helmet, race number belt, arm warmers, gloves and sun glasses. Because I had no volunteer, I reloaded my bag and took gave to someone at the door. I ran out to the bike area and made a pit stop at the sun lotion station. Two volunteers with rubber gloves and gobs of sun lotion went nuts on me. In the 10 seconds it took, I was completely covered in the white cream. I definitely wasn't going to have a problem with sunburns today. The bike corral was busy, so I didn't get the A treatment I'd heard where volunteers will hand you your bike. I got my bike off the rack and ran to the mount line at the top of the helix. I mounted and away I went, slowly, down the helix. I saw Kelly and Hans at the top, I missed my friends and Tanya and Mom at the bottom. T1 took way too long, 9:21.

Bike
For the first mile you can't pass anyone, so you need to hope you're in a speedy group. You also are supposed to respect the drafting rules. It's hard to obey the rules. I passed people and I was definitely in the draft zone, but it was safer for me to do it that way then to be an obstruction. This slower time is beneficial because I got time to make minor adjustments and take on some nutrition. I ate a cliff bar and had some water and Gatorade. When I got to the open road, I hammered down and got up to pace. I got to Verona and was feeling pretty strong. I was going a little harder than I probably should have been, but I felt good. I started the first bike loop and pushed the hills like I always do. I'd done this bike course a lot through the year, so there weren't any surprise. I got to Cross Plains and decided to drop the arm warmers. I knew Tanya, Mom, Kelly and Hans were at Mount Horeb so I wanted to ditch the warmers with them. Well, they weren't in a spot where I could throw them my gear, so I ditched them further up the coarse where no one would see and I wouldn't get penalized. Don't worry, it sounds like littering but animals in the wilderness can use them for something! I waved to my cheer group, Hans yelled at me to quit screwing around. I should mention, Tanya printed T-Shirts and made poster boards with a picture of me wearing clear goggles and gave them to everyone who came. It was very thoughtful and cleaver. It wasn't a surprise because I helped...

As I rolled up to the big hill I ditched a couple of water bottles. I didn't want the weight and I knew an aid station was not far away. I hit the hills and I was more tired than I expected. I still felt good but I didn't attack them like I had on past training rides. It was pretty fun going up though, the whole 1 kilometer hill was lined with a cheering crowd. People had written all kinds of motiviational things on the road in chalk. At the top, Tanya and gang were cheering. I was impressed they got there, because it was less than 15 minutes after I'd seen them at Cross Plains. I cranked through the next hill and made my way back to Verona. I was feeling pretty good, but definitely a little worn. When I got to Verona, I cranked up the pace. Verona was packed with people. It was very loud. I reloaded my water and Gatorade. Matt H. and Jorgen and Family were all there cheering too. I stopped at special needs and mixed a new bottle of Perpetum. I took a cliff bar and that wast the last time I'd see that bag of goodies. I was averaging over 21 MPH and was on goal pace. The nutrition plan was going well, but I was a little concerned that I hadn't had a bathroom break yet. The volume of fluids I had taken, I should have gone by now. Especially since I wasn't sweating a whole lot because of the temperature was very mild. My best estimate was my cold was still kicking around, and my nose was draining a lot. Actually, I missed my arm warmers at this point because they were doubling as Kleenex.

A slight breeze out of the West was blowing now. My pace was noticably slower. On the first lap I was cranking out miles at 21+, now I was struggling to get to 18. The very slight breeze was beating me down. I got to Mount Horeb and Tanya Cheer Squad was at the top of the hill cheering. That was a very nice suprise. That hill was killing me, so I enjoyed the motivation. I got through Cross Plains (Tanya was there again) and up the big hills, but was dragging. I left Verona and started the final 15 miles. I was feeling pretty bloated from all the fluids, and still no bathroom break. So after Verona I cut off all fluids in preparation for the run. I was craving it though because it was hot and I needed the fuel. I saw Coach Keith K. about half a mile in front of me which was great because I needed some motivation to speed up. Catching him took me a long time. About 12 miles to gain make-up that half. I had a brief conversation with Keith and then I tried to put some separation between us. For the last two miles, I shifted to high gears and increased my cadence. I wanted to get my legs read to move faster for the run. As I was coming into Madison, one of the spectator buses was passing me and hanging out all of the windows was Jorgen, Matt and Melanie. I enjoyed that. I got to helix, dismounted and volunteer took my bike. It was a mutual breakup, I didn't want to see the bike and that bike had had it with me! I was feeling tired, but ready for the marathon. And, I had to pee! 5:55:17, about 25 minutes slower than goal pace. Ironman is hard!

T2
This transiiton went a lot better than the first. I stripped the bike gear, strapped on the Lunar Racers and was out the door. As soon as I exitted, I got lathered up by the lotion people again. Jon and Andrea were cheering for me in the transition. Before I left T2, I stopped in the port-o-lou. I appreciate Jon continuing to cheer for me. With the bathroom stop, T2 was good, 3:21. I was on the run now.

Run
Jeremy and Denny had given me cautionary advice not to take the run out too fast. Too fast is hard for a simple runner like me to understand. When I run, I run as fast as I can for as long as I can. I did my best to respect their advice. I took the marathon out at 6:30 pace for the first 6 miles. With the sun, I was getting pretty warm. The temperature had gone up too, it was now in the 70's. I saw Sharone and Jeremy very early in the run too. They both suggested I slow down a little. I would, eventually... My initial running euphoria wore off after 6 miles of the run. My pace slowed 8 minute miles. I saw Denny and I estimated he was about 20 minutes ahead of me. I briefly contemplated trying to catch him, but he was running about the same pace, and I was slowing down. There were a few hills that I hadn't really realized were going to be there, and they were a challenge. But they worked out well because the hills broke up the lactid acid buildup in my legs. On the State Street turn around, all the awesome people that traveled to see this race were there cheering. I did my best to put a on a good game face, but I was hurting bad. About this time I decided I needed caffine. But I waited until I got to the run special needs bag at mile 13. I got to special needs bag, grabbed a Red Bull, and walked for a minute. I started the second half of the run hoping caffinee would save me. As I left special needs, I caught up to Jerry on his first loop. Jerry looked good and seemed to be doing well. Not long after I saw Sue and Keith. Everyone was in good spirits still. I continued to run 8 and 9 minute miles, every two miles I'd take soda, every mile I was taking water. I felt pretty drained. At mile 21 the race changed. Suddenly my legs felt better, my heart rate picked up and I was on my way home. I was back running 7:30 miles or less until the finish. Possibly it was finish line excitement, but I really felt great. The finish was really fun, I blew some kisses and pumped my arms thanking all my friends and family as I sprinted to the finish of a 3:28:46 marathon.

Official Finish Time: 10:50:59, 233 place

I didn't spend much time in the finish corral. Tanya joined me and I said to her "that was long." I didn't feel like eating anything so I skipped the snack tent. I probably needed to eat something real, but I really wasn't having it. I hung out with my family and friends for a while, then decided to go get cleaned up and come back and cheer in Jerry. I came back and met up with Denny and Jeremy. We saw Sue finish and waited for Jerry. Jeremy took off up the coarse to run in with Jerry, but ran right by him because I didn't mention to Jeremy that Jerry was wearing a jacket now. Jerry actually spotted us as he finished. Tanya, my mom and I took the long walk to Chipotle, where I ate the most delicious burrito ever made. Oh, and it was starting to rain.

It was a great day for all of us. Denny, Jerry, Don, Mindy, Keith, Sue and I all had good stories to tell. Most of the fun was all of the training leading up to the race. Believe it or not, but I enjoyed waking up at 3:30 AM every weekend to go ride or run with the guys. 20+ hours a week of training is a part time job, but it was also an unforgettable experience. I learned a few lessons for future Ironman's. I believe I can make huge improvements on this race by doing a few small things differently. I guess we'll find out next year!

Thanks to all of my friends and family that supported me at the race and throughout the year. Thank you to Hans and Kelly for driving Mom and Tanya around, they did an amazing job! And thank you to Tanya, who still agreed to marry me even after I put her through 11 hours of stress. Love you babe!

Des Moines Hy Vee Triathlon

Des Moines Hy Vee Triathlon
West Des Moines, IA
Conditions: Warm (70°F), No Wind

I have been looking forward to this race all year. It's like a homecoming race for me. It's the first triathlon my parents have seen since I did the good ol' Okoboji tri's back in high school. Ah those were the days. It was a crazy week leading up to this race. If you recall, there were issues with flooding in Iowa. In the 10 days before the tri, I got notifications that the race could be moved anywhere in Central Iowa, could be...then was a dualathlon...then may be and will be a triathlon again. I wouldn't have minded a dualathlon because swimming is my weakest link, but I did train for the water, so I was prepared for both.

My hat is off to the Des Moines Hy Vee triathlon race director. It was simply unbelievable logistically speaking, how they put such a professional race together in such a short amount of time. The race also had and ITU race with men's and women's Olympic slots riding on it, so it was great that they pulled it off. The expo was nice and the goodie bag we got was crazy good. I took a technical shirt, bike jersey, visor, laptop brief case and more!!! The sponsors were fantastic.

On race day, Jeremy and I drove over to Valley West Mall to catch the early bird bus to the swim start. On the bus ride over we discovered our race numbers were a single integer off (380 for me, 381 for him.) This was nice because we were right next to each other in T1. We had plenty of time before the race started to prep and scope out the competition. The weather was perfect, low 60's and going to be sunny.

We got in the water, it was a fast swim for me. 27:57, by far my fastest swim time in this distance. T1 was fast too, under 2 minutes. But Jeremy and had great spots. I ran into trouble on the exit of T1. I got on my bike and something was wrong. I noticed my bag had come loose. I tried fixing it on the fly but that was dumb...so I dismounted and repaired it. Easily lost a minute. The rest of the bike ride was great. The course was pretty flat and fast with long straights. The loop around the Mall was very fast. I found myself stuck with the same guys. One guy had Iowa Hawkeye socks on and I was not going to let that guy beat me. He didn't and I finished with a time of 1:08:36. T2 was very fast, I'm starting to get this pattern stuff down. I got on the run and saw Tanya, my family and Denny and Ross Mills. The run course had some hill work in it, but it was definitely fast. I went out in 5:30's and eventually slowed, but I was always passing people. I love it when I run by someone and I hear them say "holy [EXPLETIVE]" The run finished up a monster hill. I was all by myself but I kept a fast pace. Finished the run in 36:39. The finish line is unbelievable. I felt like a pro with the grand stands and blue mat on the ground. I did a little show-off for the finish line cameras. Fastest ever overall finish: 2:16:47.

I will be back for this one.

Spirit of Racine

Spirit of Racine Triathlon
Racine, WI
Conditions: Hot (80°F), No Wind

My weekend started Friday when the emails started going around that the water temperature in Lake Michigan was well below 60 F... I snuck up to Mission Bay Multisport over lunch and found a lovely full length wetsuit. Looking for wetsuits is a lot like shopping for wedding dresses (I would think), except I was sweating profusely and when I found the suit I liked, I looked like a staved seal.

Saturday started off with torrential rains, much to the dismay of Jerry who had scheduled the weekends activities to the second. Tanya and drove up to Racine late Saturday morning and met with Jerry, Jeremy and Denny for lunch at Noodles & Co. We got in our warmup bike and run and headed to the harbor to get our packet and drop off the bikes. While at registration, we learned Jimmy Buffet was in town...No Jerry, you have to do the race.

Race day started off nice and early. We picked up Jeremy around 4:50 AM. It turned out we were plenty early. Very heavy fog delayed the start by an hour. I got in my new wetsuit, a bit nervous about the first time in a full suit being in a race situation. But you know what they say, the race is the best time to try something new...I got in a few minutes in the water before the start. My focus on the function of the suit was quickly lost to the freezing sensation my hands, feet and face were feeling. It was going to be a cold swim!

The race went off and I can say I never really noticed the water being too cold. The race course was pretty close to shore, only about 20 meters out. We had a little bit of a current. I got in a good rythem and got long in the water. I felt like I was really moving. Stragglers from the 20-29 age group were getting in my way (yes, that was me last year...) When I got out of the water, I knew I was out fast. Turns out the swim was likely 200m short, although race officials said 50m at the most... It was a fairly long run from the water to T1 which is a benefit to me. Hi Tanya! Sharone from Wellfit was taunting me..."Ben beat you out of the water" he said. "Yeah, he had a three minute head start!" I yelled back.

I had a great T1, 1:45.

The bike course starts with a short steep uphill. I had the bike in the correct gear and I got locked in very quickly, so I blew up the hill and was on my way. I got with a group of 3 other riders and we had a 'legal' draft pack going. The bike course is a fast one, no big hills, lots of long straights with gradual rises and drops. We were cruising through the first half, I was averaging well over 23 mph. Denny caught me at mile 28. He dropped his water bottle while telling me to slow down...smooth move D! I was able to hang with Denny for about 10 miles, but for that 10 miles we were in a Peloton. Everyone was drafting. Denny would pull away and the pack would catch him. I'd try to stick with Denny and then I'd get eaten up. Finally I decided to pull back and sit legal off the back because we were way overdue to see a course marshall. The group pulled away and I was back with the original three people I started with. With about 10 miles left, I was getting fatigued, I slowed my pace to rest for the run. The sun had come out, it was about to get hot out. Final bike time, 2:28

Going down the hill on the bike going into T2, I was able to get out of my shoes easily. I had a quick dismount and a very quick T2. 1 minute.

I got out running, hi Tanya! Sharone was taunting me again, this time taking my picture. He takes a lot of pictures, but he's never sent me a shutterfly link...weird. The run course is two loops, it starts with two pretty substantial hill climbs. Jeremy and I both discussed these hills and said they were a great thing. They broke up the legs, shook out the lactic acid buildup. Good for you, but they still sucked. First lap was great. I caught and passed Denny about 3 miles in. Jeremy was within sight. At the end of the first lap, Jeremy was about two blocks ahead of me. Tanya, Crystal and Sarah were all out being half-iron cheer squad and doing a great job! Jeremy was very close at the last turnaround. I could tell he was not feeling well. But he was able to keep the distance between us. He actually pulled away at the end as my pace fell. Still, I turned the half marathon in 1:28.

This was a fantastic race for me and a completely unexpected result. I had realistically said a 4:40ish time would be awesome, but had thought a 4:30 was possible. To break that is outstanding. Everything went well. I have all my great training partners to thank. Denny's great advice, Jeremy's motivation, and Jerry's courage.

Soldier Field 10 Mile

Soldier Field 10 Mile
Chicago, IL
Conditions: Mild (60°F), No Wind

One of my favorite races. The weather couldn't have been better for this one. Tim McGraw's cousin sang the National Anthem, I think her name was Hottie McGraw if I remember correctly.

The race went off with a bang (that might only be funny to me.) I went out a little slow, for the first five miles I was fighting a minor stomach cramp. That shook off at the turn around and the last 5 miles was negative split. The last five miles I also ran with the first place woman and her training companion. Consistent 5:50's with her, it was a good challenge because there were not many people in front to catch, I may have slowed down with out her. Once I got to Soldier Field, I put the pace down and blew the lady away, I didn't want to share the big screen (or the crowd.)

So I finished, grabbed a beer, and took off for home. Tanya moved into my...our apartment that day. Fortunately I had help from my friends Richard and Corey. It was a very long day! Shoutout to Corey and Richard for helping move that day.

Dam to Dam

Dam to Dam 20k
Des Moines, IA
Conditions: Mild (68°F), No Wind

I think the last time I ran Dam to Dam was in 2002. It's a fast course, mostly downhill. You start at the Salorville Lake dam and finish in downtown Des Moines. I don't remember the last race I ran where I didn't have a timing chip. The race has over 4000 runners, that's a lot of tags to collect...

My dad drove me to the start at 5 AM. I got in a good warmup, scoped out the competition. Lots of good runners in this field. The start was funny, they didn't have a separate spot for elites and they didn't label areas by mile pace, so everyone crowded to the front. Some of the elites were just in front of the start line because they couldn't move back any further. The first two miles are fast! You sprint the dam for mile one, mile two is down a pretty good hill. I settled into my pace around mile 4. The first two women runners were right with me (I was running 5:35 miles) so I hung with them. From that point on, I was no where near anyone in front of me or behind me. I ran with the 2nd place woman until mile 11...where she dropped me (still running 5:45's) A note about the competition, I was 45 seconds faster than Soldier Field at Mile 10 and I was in 30th place! I cruised the final two miles in

Engagement Day

Tanya and I are getting hitched! I caught her by surprise and she hasn't lost her smile since. We were in London after my conference in Newcastle. We were staying with Tanya's former Chicago roommate Rachel and her boyfriend in their gorgeous London flat. On our second full day there, we had planned to go out and see some sights. First on the list was the London Eye. I knew I was going to do it on the Eye, but didn't know when. I scoped out the situation and decided it best to wait until we were 3/4 of the way around (what if Tanya passed out?) We got to the 3/4 point and I was a bit nervous now. It was really hot in the car (for real.) I wanted to give the camera to someone else on our car so they could snap action shots, but we had a somewhat unfriendly foreign passengers with us. I abandoned that told Tanya I had to tie my shoe. Yes, I stole that from The Office. She noticed my shoe wasn't untied and I said my thing. Tanya doesn't remember a word I said, but she did say yes. She also said "are you kidding" about a dozen times. Like most people who just got engaged, Tanya and I enjoyed the moment by taking in the Winston Churchill Museum. I'm not sure if Ironman training will get me out of wedding planning, but it's the best excuse I've got!

Week 19 (18/36) in Review

This was a vacation week. Saturday the 26th Tanya and I left for Newcastle, England. I got one run in there. I was very busy with conference activities and touring and skipped most of my workouts while there. I got more running in while in London. Running in London is dangerous when you're used to running in the States. The cars being on the 'wrong side of the road' is a problem. I almost got ran over a few times... it was jolly good running despite the near death experience.

So the big news. Friday, May 2 I proposed to Tanya on the London Eye. I'll write a separate post to give you the details on this.

A summary of week 19 (April 27, 2008 - May 3, 2008)

Sunday 4/27: Travel Day
Monday 4/28: Run (5 Miles)
Tuesday 4/29: ASHRAE/CIBSE Conference
Wednesday 4/30: ASHRAE/CIBSE Conference, Travel
Thursday 5/1: Run (7 Miles)
Friday 5/2: (4 Miles) ENGAGEMENT DAY!!!
Saturday 5/3: We walked at least 10 miles this day, but it's a free workout.

Week 20 (17/36) in Review

The week started in Boston, you can read all about that in a separate post. The rest of the week was pretty much recovery. Boston took it's toll on me. With travel, work and more travel on the agenda, getting good workouts in were tough. I hadn't intended to skip Friday, but I got caught in a fairly severe thunderstorm as I was to begin a 6 miler. This will be week 1 of a 2 week reset before the core Ironman training begins in May. Unfortunately I had to miss a swim technique class. I need all those I can get right now.

Boston Marathon

112th Boston Marathon
Boston, MA
Conditions: Mild (54°F), Light Wind E

A beautiful day for a run. Having experience from the year before was handy, it really makes it much easier to prepare for the start knowing you're going to be sitting around for 2+ hours before the race start. I decided to give it all I had as the clouds cleared and the sun came out. I knew it was going to be perfect weather, cool with a light headwind. I decided sub 2:40 was the goal for the day, my plan to achieve this? Run the first 20 miles in 2 hours and gut out the hills and hope for the best.

Boston starts with a sharp downhill, pretty much for the first 6 miles. I went out quick, but comfortable. I gave Lance Armstong a "Let's go" as I went past him. He was going much slower at the start. 5k came very quickly, then 10k. I didn't know it but Tanya was there cheering. Yay. As I crossed the 10k I realized I was really moving, sub 36. The thought that I may be going too fast crossed my mind but I was with a good pace group trying for 2:30's. I would have slowed down but I felt comfortable. 10 miles came and I was 2 minutes under an hour, a little ahead of my planned pace. At half, as the girls of Wellesley screamed away, I saw my watch tell me I just ran a sub 1:18 half. "holy shit" I said out loud. That was a a new personal best time for a half marathon. Guess I didn't expect that. I'm still feeling great.

I was moving good, slowing down at an even pace until I hit the first monster hill at mile 18, approximately 30k. The downhill of 18 might have been my overall downfall. I didn't recover well from that. 2:02 at mile 20, still on pace for low 2:40's. Heartbreak hill hit at mile 21 and the battle for 2:45 ended. By the end of heartbreak, my legs were very heavy and I had to slow down dramatically so would have legs to finish the race. Disappointing, but I know I'm still close to breaking 2:50. By 40k my legs were ceasing occasionally, and I was worried about a total lockup, so I slowed a bit more. The crowd noise was deafening, and it wasn't them encouraging me to speed up. The man who concurred Alps Duez and the Pyranees was slowly passing me. That's right, Lance and his entourage rolled by me. Thus ending my last overall goal of beating an icon. I rolled onto Boylston Street and made my way across the finish line. 2:52:37, a new personal best and a course improvement of 27 minutes over 2007. I'll take that.

Week 22 (15/36) in Review

Taper week! Took two days off running, it was needed. I even skipped swimming one day. I was pretty drug down by Thursday, so when I woke up late for swimming I took that as a sign I need to rest a day or two. Conveniently I used the two really crappy, cold, rainy days this week to not do jack. And when I ran Friday, I felt like a million dollars. Boston is a week away. I'm ready to go.

Week 23 (14/36) in Review

Two weeks from now we're in Boston. I'm ready to go. This week was as hard or harder than any week to date. I finished with a strong 21 mile run. My swimming is improving by leaps and bounds, the Well Fit training classes are making a difference. My diet and training have taken me from the heaviest I've ever been (165 lbs) down to 145 lbs. My blood pressure and resting heart rate are also much lower than when I last checked. Overall, I'm as fit if not more fit than I've ever been. Oh, and warm weather came back, very good for motivation and attitude.

The Shuffle is the official start of the road racing season in Chicago, so why not go for a strong start. I had intended to run 5:15 to 5:20 pace for the whole race, I ended up running a 5:37 average. Started strong at 5:15; not sure what mile two, three or four were at, but I know mile two was around 5:20. Still need to work on the competition, that's all that's missing is keeping with the group. Had a strong finish, didn't have a whole lot left.

Week 25 (12/36) in Review

Week 25. Finally over 60 miles running. Started the week off with my first official race of the year at Cary. The run went well, my time was good considering the recent injury, slow return to milage, and hilly course. Probably could have been a little more competitive, we'll apply that at the Shamrock Shuffle. Feeling like a 6 to 6:15 marathon mile pace right now. Had a couple of good workout runs, kept pace below 6 minute miles. Finished the week in very hilly Sioux City. Got my money's worth out of the Garmin watch this weekend. I finished the week with my first 20 mile of the year, 1500 ft of elevation rise/fall and about a 7 minute mile pace. I got on the bike one day, other than that, just the usual. Increased my weight training, now or never.

Week 26 (11/36) in Review

Week 26 I returned to the 40 miles/per week club. Feeling good and loving any weather over 30°F, I mixed in some tempo workouts. Thursday I ran a 9 mile run with 6 at tempo. I held a 6:00/mile pace over the distance. This was a good confidence test going into my first race of the year. Swimming kept up, I enrolled for the next 8 week session. I did no biking this week, that will start again next week. Boston is only 5 weeks away.

Race: Midnight Madness Half Marathon - Cary, IL

Midnight Madness Half Marathon
Cary, IL
Conditions: Cold (26°F-34°F), Light Wind

I learned where Cary, Illinois is. I also learned that there are hills in Illinois. My goal was 1:20:00, I ran a 1:21:08. Not too bad considering my recent injury setback and the elevation changes in the course. However my racing skills were definitely lacking. I did not put up much of a fight, I think not running in a group is the main problem here. I'll try to remedy that soon.
The race started slow, 6:10 first mile. I moved up with the second pack, places 3 thru 7, and increased my mile pace to 5:50. After mile 5 my shoe came untied and I got dropped and ended up running by myself for the distance. There were pretty large separations between groups. A few Fleet Feet guys passed me between miles 9 and 13. Mile 8 and 10 had monster hills, bigger than heartbreak.

I felt strong through most of the race, a little slow actually. The hills caught up to me at the end. A promising first effort, we'll translate these times into Boston.

Bike Shoes

I've upgraded to a triathlon shoe. The SIDI T2's fit like a glove.  They can easily be worn without socks and they slip on quickly.  They're about a 1/4 of the weight of my previous shoe. The Speedplay pedals and cleats have been installed, now I need to get used to them before I practice crashing.

Week 27 and I'm back on the road again. Not too much and not too fast but it's better than nothing. Jerry's guy, Mark Priest, fixed me right up. That mixed in with a couple of days of yoga routines. Should be about 90% by the half-marathon next weekend, that's good enough to compete. Hopefully this lousy weather will start going away.

New Shoes

The new kicks. Asics GEL-DS Trainer 13's. The laces are offset from center, a very comfortable fit. These will likely be the shoe of choice for Boston.

The previous shoes are Adidas Supernova's. They have held up great and still have a lot of life in them. But at 340 miles, they have about 50% life left so it's time to start breaking in something new.

Week 29 (8/36) in Review

Week 29 started off with a lot of hopes and expectations. It was to be the first 60 mile week of the year. This goal was not realized. In the words of a great philosopher "doh". On Tuesday I noticed a tweaking pain in my upper right butt just below my hip bone. I powered through a Wednesday 5 miler only to hardly be able to walk on Thursday. I rested a day and made it a mile on Friday before I couldn't take it any longer. It appears to be an IT band injury or a muscle imbalance. To rememdy this as quick as possible, I decided to start stretching (start...) and have added athletic yoga into my workout routine. We'll see what happens.

Week 30 (7/36) in Review

Week 30. I'm tired of winter. The cold snaps will not go away. I'm stuck inside running still, hamster syndrome has set in. This was week 2 of the WellFit swim fitness classes. I will have to take a swim basics class, I really have bad form. It was an average running week, the highest mileage to date, but the long run wasn't there. As with last week, my long run was the only run outside, and it was still really damned cold! My Garmin watch got confused when I went over the bridge over the Chicago river, so I ended up doing 19 miles instead of 18. You'd think I would have noticed that...Turns out my butt is telling me today. One good strength day, now just three more per week and I'm where I should be. Work is still cutting into my workouts, 60 hours again. I'd better get running, it's 45 degrees out right now, but rainy. Going to be ice/snow later today.

Week 31 (6/36) in Review

Week 31. The strongest week yet. The WellFit swim fitness classes have begun. On Tuesday's and Thursday's for the next 6 weeks I leave my house at 5 AM to go jump in a cold pool with Jerry and Dave. The workouts are definitely good.

It was another great running week, with the exception that 6 out of 7 runs were on the treadmill. I'm keeping up a good pace, and averaging over 7 miles per day. My long run was 16 miles this week, it was the only day mild enough to get outside. I felt great, my first and last miles were slow because of snow and ice, but the 14 in hte middle were between 6 and 6:30 mile pace.

Not much new for biking, still a couple of hours a week on the indoor, probably need to get my strength training started too, just too short on time. 60+ hours at work are cutting away valuable training time.

Week 32 (5/36) in Review

Week 32 was an excellent week for training. 50+ miles on the road, some good times in the water and a couple of tough rides. Everything was indoors however... I discovered a new form of torture (government take note) Nothing is worse than a long run on a treadmill. Saturday I did 14 miles on the treadmill at the Hilton. It was already hot inside, and they club sets the time limit to 60 minutes. Well, I didn't do 14 in 60 minutes... I did it in 1:36. So I had to reset the machine halfway thru. I was really not a fun was to run, but I took in some good TV. On Thursday I did the hardest run of the year, 7 miles and did the last mile at 5:20 pace.

Week 33 (4/36) In Review

Week 33 wasn't much more productive than week 34. Two days off running again. Pretty dang cold out still. Had two good runs on the treadmill, one over lunch (fast pace) and another Friday night, tough hill workout. Ended this week with the big Company "Winter Party", my taxes are done, and have some sad news about my Grandma Kathy. I'm pulling for Granny, she has some tough days ahead of her. As for me, 4 weeks down and feeling pretty good.

Week 34 (3/36) In Review

Week 34...Not a great running week. Two days off running is not a good thing to do. Missed my 13 miler too, instead I rocked an early morning 10 on the treadmill. I hit the weights a little harder. I worked until Midnight on a project in Korea for the bossman, as I suspected, he didn't really appreciate the effort. The next day it was dangerously cold and icy...Then it was off to NYC for ASHRAE.

Week 35 (2/36) in Review

Week 35 (Boston Week 15) was a good one. It started with three days in the 50's. Unfortunately, on two of those days I ran inside because of thunderstorms. T-storms in January?!? I hope you're happy Al Gore.

No soreness this week so I must not be trying hard enough. My speed is picking up. Again all biking was done on the indoor trainer. I watched the BCS Championship (you suck OSU) and the movie "Super Bad" while on the bike. Funny movie, way over-the-top. I enjoyed the cops describing Eminem. Well, here it is, a summary of week 35 (January 6, 2008 - January 12, 2008)

Week 36 (1/36) in Review

Week 36 should also be known as week 1. Week 36 is also Boston Week 16. It's easier to track the amount of time left by counting down. Week one was the first solid week of exercise since September... I'm sore, sleeping a lot better; the good news is the rest did some good. There are no residual aches or pains. All the slowness of 2007 is hopefully gone. All biking was done on the indoor trainer. One run was indoors because of extreme cold conditions. Here is a summary of week 36 (December 30, 2007 - January 5, 2008)

Sunday 12/30: Bike (45 Min)
Monday 12/31: Run (7 Miles)
Tuesday 1/1: Run (6 Miles) Bike (1 hour)
Wednesday 1/2: Run (5.5 Miles) Swim (20 Min)
Thursday 1/3: Bike (1 hour)
Friday 1/4: Run (4.5 Miles)

Stats:
Running: 33 Miles, 4:26:30
Biking: Indoor Trainer, 2:45:00
Swimming: Indoor Pool, 0:20:00

It Begins

Welcome to my Ironman Wisconsin training blog. If you were wondering if someone could be more insane than you, then read this blog. Over the next 36 weeks I will describe the intimate details of my training program. In 16 weeks I will be competing in the 112th Boston Marathon; while that is a very important race, my training will still be primarily focused on the Ironman. I will try to post a weekly summary of my training program.
