Des Moines Hy Vee Triathlon
West Des Moines, IA
Conditions: Warm (70°F), No Wind
I have been looking forward to this race all year. It's like a homecoming race for me. It's the first triathlon my parents have seen since I did the good ol' Okoboji tri's back in high school. Ah those were the days. It was a crazy week leading up to this race. If you recall, there were issues with flooding in Iowa. In the 10 days before the tri, I got notifications that the race could be moved anywhere in Central Iowa, could be...then was a dualathlon...then may be and will be a triathlon again. I wouldn't have minded a dualathlon because swimming is my weakest link, but I did train for the water, so I was prepared for both.
My hat is off to the Des Moines Hy Vee triathlon race director. It was simply unbelievable logistically speaking, how they put such a professional race together in such a short amount of time. The race also had and ITU race with men's and women's Olympic slots riding on it, so it was great that they pulled it off. The expo was nice and the goodie bag we got was crazy good. I took a technical shirt, bike jersey, visor, laptop brief case and more!!! The sponsors were fantastic.
On race day, Jeremy and I drove over to Valley West Mall to catch the early bird bus to the swim start. On the bus ride over we discovered our race numbers were a single integer off (380 for me, 381 for him.) This was nice because we were right next to each other in T1. We had plenty of time before the race started to prep and scope out the competition. The weather was perfect, low 60's and going to be sunny.

We got in the water, it was a fast swim for me. 27:57, by far my fastest swim time in this distance. T1 was fast too, under 2 minutes. But Jeremy and had great spots. I ran into trouble on the exit of T1. I got on my bike and something was wrong. I noticed my bag had come loose. I tried fixing it on the fly but that was dumb...so I dismounted and repaired it. Easily lost a minute. The rest of the bike ride was great. The course was pretty flat and fast with long straights. The loop around the Mall was very fast. I found myself stuck with the same guys. One guy had Iowa Hawkeye socks on and I was not going to let that guy beat me. He didn't and I finished with a time of 1:08:36. T2 was very fast, I'm starting to get this pattern stuff down. I got on the run and saw Tanya, my family and Denny and Ross Mills. The run course had some hill work in it, but it was definitely fast. I went out in 5:30's and eventually slowed, but I was always passing people. I love it when I run by someone and I hear them say "holy [EXPLETIVE]" The run finished up a monster hill. I was all by myself but I kept a fast pace. Finished the run in 36:39. The finish line is unbelievable. I felt like a pro with the grand stands and blue mat on the ground. I did a little show-off for the finish line cameras. Fastest ever overall finish: 2:16:47.
I will be back for this one.
